About the Galleries

Here at the Nursing Editors History Project we have four “gallery” views of journals and editors. These views are generated off the database that houses the NEHP info.

The four views are:

If you go to one of these pages, give it a minute or two to load. There is lots of information that needs to be accessed and it can take more than a few seconds to process.

Sophia Palmer, Founding Editor of the AJN, 1900

It is easy to navigate through the views and all four act the same way.  One the main page for each view, you will see a display of cards for each journal or person. The number of cards that will display varies depending on the device you are using: on a smart phone, you will see one card per row–just scroll through the list to look at others. On a tablet you will see two cards per row and on a computer, three. Note that this may vary depending on the device you are using and the size of the screen.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the screen, you will see “View Larger Version.” Click on that and a larger screen, displaying more cards per row will open in a new tab.

Each card displays pertinent information about the journal or the person. If you click or tap on the card, it will open up and turn over showing more information–think of it sort of like an index card. To close this view, click on the X in the upper right corner.

Nursing Mirror and Midwives Journal, 1956

On a computer (but not on a tablet or smartphone), at the top of the page, you will see the option to “Filter” or “Sort.” By default, all cards are displayed alphabetically. You can choose “sort” to organize the display in different ways. For example, if you select sort by “Pub Began” on the Journals view, that would organize the display in chronological order, beginning with the American Journal of Nursing in 1900.

Filter allows you to restrict the number of cards which might make for easier navigation. Again, in the journals view, if you select “Journal name contains American,” then only two journals (AJN and MCN) would be displayed.

On the same navigation bar, at the right you will see a magnifying glass icon which allows you to search the gallery view to quickly find a specific person or journal.

At the time of this writing (September, 2018) there are 33 journals in the NEHP. These are journals for which editors or librarians submitted data forms in the spring and summer of 2015, plus a few additional journals where NEHP staff researched and compiled the information. The NEHP was closed to new submissions for about two years while we researched the best way to maintain and organize the journals, editors, and editorials in our database. Now, with the launch of this site, we are open again to accepting submissions. Please read this page to learn what we are looking for and how to submit journal information to our database for our review. We will regularly update the number of journals that are stored in the NEHP.

As you look through the three “people” views for editors, you will notice we are missing photographs for many of the past and founding editors. If you have pictures of any of these editors, we would be most appreciative to receive a copy. Please use the contact form to get in touch and let us know how we can obtain the picture. Thank you in advance for your help!
